The Labyrinth Wall ISBN: 9780991531219, Obsidian Series – Book 1, Luminous Word Press, a fantasy e-book by Emilyann Girdner.
The protagonist is Ariana, a product of the ‘creators’ who bring seemingly large numbers of individuals to life. They are brought forth, given a basic supply of food and water and their choice of weapons and released into a surrounding labyrinthine area where they toil to collect obsidian for which they are paid with minimal supplies when brought to the collector/guards. Their compensation always is inadequate, so most kill each other in fighting literally to survive. The reigning powers could not care less, for they just create more. Ariana was created two years ago but with the development of an older teen and has been able to avoid killing because of adroit management and a seemingly well-developed ability to attain the necessities and avoid confrontations. The story progresses as she encounters one who frequently has killed along with others who are part of a group formed to work collectively so as to lessen/eliminate the need and this strange collection of individuals attempt to find a way out of their all-encompassing maze after encountering a stranger from ‘outside’. The tale presents closure to the action but also most appropriately provides entré to the next book.
The author has set forth a young adult fantasy that would appear to be more suitable for the younger portion of this scale for several reasons; most sentences are short, the verbalization seems more appropriate to this level, the characters are inconsistent in thought and action patterns and the activity level is sufficient to overcome the uneven pattern of presentation. A plus is that a glossary is provided at the end which a prospective reader would find helpful to peruse before starting the story.

The Labyrinth Wall Emilyann Girdner 9781304639448 Books Reviews

The Labyrinth Wall is a thrilling fantasy with an original plot, creative content, and heart-thumping adventure. The mysterious labyrinth is used in a unique way in this story, so there is no predicting the events that occur throughout. I would definitely describe this book as a page-turner, filled with action, drama and humor in all the right places. There is also a deeper meaning to the characters and the story overall, and I think this is a great book for adults and teens alike in displaying bravery, determination and perseverance. The fast-pace of the story was great and kept me captivated the entire time, and I read this book rather quickly. This was my instruction to the Obsidian Series, and I will be reading the other books in the series to see what I have missed so far. If you are in to fantasy and mystery, even if you have read other labyrinth books, you should pick this one up.
This certainly isn’t the first labyrinth story, but it is refreshingly unique. What I really thought was interesting about this book is that the characters in the labyrinth were actually created in it and have never been outside of it. A lot of the story is about survival when the creators of the main character, Araina, launch attacks against the people inside the labyrinth. I thought the writing was really good, especially since the target audience is young adults. Sentences are short and the writing is obviously for a somewhat younger audience, but I really do think it is well-done and was worth the read. It had a Hunger Games feel for me, which is definitely a good thing because I loved that series as well. I was really impressed by Emilyann Girdner and will definitely get the next book in the series. Overall, this was an exciting and fantastical read that I would definitely recommend.
Emilyann Girdner creates a story that will attract all fantasy readers out there. It offers a really nice twist to the standard labyrinth tales where one finds himself trapped inside and needs to find his way out. Here, the characters were born inside it and spend their entire life looking for a way out. It is a very interesting premise and the author delivers a very good story.
The Labyrinth Wall (Obsidian Series) is targeted for YA; that does explain the short sentences and the language used. To me it as a bit of a let-down but I’m not the target here. Regardless, I enjoyed the story and found it quite engaging. The characters could use some work. I understand that this is a fantasy book but sometimes it felt that characters and the way they acted and talked did not match the character’s presentation or the way the author made us feel about them. I’m still struggling to understand if that’s a great writing talent (making us wait for the unexpected) or if it’s still a problem of the style definition. Overall, I liked it and I’ll get the second book of the series.
Imagine living a life in a dark labyrinth where feeling constant hunger is the norm. Fighting for survival by finding the last bits of food is what moves you from morning to night. On top of everything, you have to think of paying the obsidian taxes or else, you face cruel penalties. This is the life of Araina, a member of the Mahks, the people created by the Creators whose life in a position of power abuse is very different from the one of those they have created. While Mahks starve on a couple of potatoes and a dead rat, the Creators have all the cherries they could eat. While Araina holds to her pet bird Blue for life, the Creators have a world full of beauty, gold and flocks of blue-feathered birds.

It is like the contrast of heaven and hell. One day, Araina discovers that the walls of the labyrinth she thought she knew so well move and open doors to an unknown labyrinth world. She doesn’t want to spend the rest of her life in the familiar misery and, along with Darith, another Mahk, she starts exploring the new world. As she slowly discovers why she is in the situation she is, throwing away preconceptions about people she knew, she meets the healer Korun, develops a new friendship with Darith she considered an enemy, collects an army of supporters and finds a small haven in the labyrinth, after having to pass through a world of Blades and more dangers that test her. A curious read that flows well.
