Read this as part of the ongoing project to help a friend compile a booklist for her group, Adult children of Parents with PTSD.

To my surprise, it is a dog, Atlas, who has the PTSD. Apparently, this is common among canines trained for the military and I daresay the police service. When the handler dies, the dog mourns and some dogs are harder hit than others and this dog is hard hit.

The hero, David, who is trying to work with the dog also has PTSD from his own service in the military. Lyn, the heroine, has some issues and everything collides in this novel and Atlas has a starring role. Go, Atlas.

Extreme Honor True Heroes Piper J Drake 9781455536047 Books Reviews

Just could NOT put it down .. your brought into the story from the first page ! Wow one of best books I have ever read !!!
I love how this author combines dogs and people in a suspenseful and entertaining story
I liked the book. The ending left you wondering a little, but all in all It was a good book!!
Both characters were strong characters but where pulled together and worked beautifully together .. Love ready about a realistic female who can hold her own with out being bitchy or not real or making the man seem weak.. Great job Piper... Already buying book 2 and preordered 3
Am enjoying this series and hope she write more. I like the story line and the dogs are a nice addition
David is trying to help Atlas the canine one of his fellow teammates was a handler for. Atlas is grieving the loss of his friend and handler. Lyn has been sent in to help with the dogs recovery. David is also looking into the death of his friend and Atlas handler and does not want the distraction of a dog whisperer. Lyn is attached in her hotel room the first day she meets Atlas and that has David on edge. He needs to find the truth about the death of his friend and what and why people are after Lyn and Atlas.
I was really looking forward to this book - it had two of my favorite things a military hero and a dog! Unfortunately for me the story fell a bit flat and the pacing just seemed slow. I ended up putting this book down several times and then coming back to it.

David is former military and he know own a kennel that trains dogs including military working dogs with two of his friends who are also former military. When his friend is killed overseas David begins working with his friend's traumatized dog Atlas. Lyn a civilian dog trainer is also hired to work with Atlas. Lyn's step-father is military and she carries several prejudices into her views of the military based on the cold relationship she has with him. Lyn and David are working together to help Atlas while David also tries to discover what happened to his friend.

I think my first problem is that Lyn is supposed to be this great dog trainer and yet other than talking to the dog, taking him for walks and giving him belly rubs we don't really see her do any training that David isn't directing. Because of this, I had a hard time buying her role as a dog whisperer. There is a lot of information on how David trains military working dogs but not contrasting training from Lyn. Lyn is slow to let her walls down and I never really felt the chemistry between the two of them.

The suspense is slow to get going and a lot of characters are thrown in that are fleshed out. I'm not sure why I didn't find the suspense plot compelling after all it had murder, corruption and people pretending to be what they aren't but I just never really got caught up in it. Unfortunately I just didn't find either the romance or the suspense to be compelling in this one. However, sometimes the first book in a series isn't the best so I will give this series another chance with book 2.
