Tempted eBook Paul Micheals
This is a fantastic first book from a new author. I love fiction/fantasy/crime books and Tempted did not disappoint. The storyline will immediately pull you in and then the suspense builds from there. It was honestly hard to put this book down, I read most of it within a day. The main character is very likeable and he is forced to grow up due to circumstances taking place. Great coming of age story with twists and turns along the way. Paul Micheals is a great new author and I look forward to reading more of his books in the future.Tags : Tempted - Kindle edition by Paul Micheals. Tempted eBook Paul Micheals Reviews
Tempted by Paul Micheals is a coming of age story with a difference - a dark twist that will come at you from left field and knock you to your knees.
When his father is murdered, Alexi Gallo has to drop out of school and take a low-paying job to support his pregnant mother. His life seems to be going nowhere fast until one day he is approached by a slick-talking attorney, Rudolph Dontinelli, who offers him a job. He is puzzled that Dontinelli knows so much about him and his family, but eventually gives in and becomes a runner for a string of high-priced prostitutes.
Life gets complicated when he finds himself falling for Traci, one of the hookers, and then even more so when his mother dies during childbirth.
Tempted shows the gritty underside of life, that plane occupied by a large percentage of the population - but with a freakish difference. Alexi has a secret that even he doesn't know at first, but one that spells the difference between order and chaos, between life and death - and, if his luck runs out, the choice for him could be death.
Michaels is a master craftsman who takes the ordinary and mundane and somehow molds it into a grotesque, almost unrecognizable image, which is nonetheless believable. Take a wild ride with him through the twisted pathways of Alexi Gallo's life; you won't regret it.
I received a free copy of Tempted for review.
I received a copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Tempted is essentially a supernatural mob story. Think corruption, prostitution ring, Italian family values and lots of betrayal with the added element of timeless evil. While there was a lot of potential in this book, there were several places where the lack of clarity and detail left me with questions. I had real trouble placing this in time, so I didn't ever get a firm mental picture of characters or setting. Another problem was the missing explanation about the supernatural element. I'm still not sure what the entity was exactly, and the rules surrounding the magic involved were never explained. While that certainly meant I had no idea what was going to happen next, it made it almost impossible to understand any of the magical battles that took place. Readers aren't the only ones who can't figure out what is going on. The main character is strung along for the entirety of the story, and I didn't really see the advantage as it created more frustration than suspense. In the end, it wasn't a book that felt fine tuned. I wouldn't have finished reading it if I hadn't requested the review copy.
This was an intriguing and mysterious story. I got frustrated at the narrator early on because I couldn't figure out who it was. In my mind it could have been more than one of the characters who were filling us in on past events a little bit at a time before each chapter. I found this jump back and forth in time confusing and it slowed the story down too much for my taste. It got to the point the elephant on the cover irritated me to no end because I couldn't make the connection. The elephant had to be important, right? It was on the cover! The story was about at 47% before we learned about the elephant statue on uncle Darius's desk and his dead twin sister's love for elephants. Then around 64% we learned that Alexis's own mother had an elephant collection. I am afraid I became obsessed about the elephant and the narrator to the point I almost quit reading the story at about 50%. However, I continued because the characters were compelling.
Alexi was in high school when his father was murdered, so he quit school to get a job to support his pregnant mother. He was approached by the mysterious Rudolph Dontinelli late one evening with promises of a well-paying job. Alexi succumbed to the man's promises and was thrown into a gritty underworld of crime and prostitution as a runner. He becomes infatuated with Traci, a girl about his age, who has taken to a life of prostitution to clear her father's debts. As the plot twists and turns Alexi is finally introduced to his uncle Darius, who is a lot more than he seems. Darius promises to take care of Alexi, and his sick baby sister, if he will come back to Sicily with him where he can offer him protection. The problem is Alexi wants to take Traci with him. Alexi's idealistic picture of the world shatters when he starts feeling this mysterious power within himself. He needs uncle Darius to help him learn to control it and to protect himself when everyone seems to want his power.
So if you can read the story without obsessing about the elephant (like I did) and assume the story is being narrated by uncle Darius, which I am sure now it was, then you are likely to find this an entertaining dark urban fantasy. I found the magic fascinating.
FYI Adult crude language abounds, so reader beware.
Format/Typo Issues I noticed a small number of proofing misses.

Riveting! First rate for his first book ... once I was into Alexi and the other characters I couldn't put it down!
I bought this on a whim, and was surprised to find I couldn't put it down. NO SPOILERS HERE, so all I'll say is that it starts well and gets better and better as it goes. I love a bit of intrigue and suspense and Micheals absolutely delivers both.
This is the best first novel I've read since Paul Doiron's, "The Poacher's Son"!!!
Doiron is now my favorite author. Doiron's books are fantastic and realistic, and he's working on his 5th book
Maybe I just love writer's named Paul, but I think Paul Micheals is heading in the same brilliant direction.
Well well worth my $15.
